Pompeii by Aristocrat – Slot Machine Review
A small piece of history is being served to us in this Aristocrat release, Pompeii obviously being inspired by the famous city of Ancient Roman origin, which was destroyed when Mount Vesuvius erupted close to two millenia ago. It happened in the year 79 AD, and now we have an opportunity to get a glimpse into how life was like for the city’s inhabitants back then. It’s a game that is very popular in land-based casinos, but it’s been ported online as well, to be played by its fans when they’re at home.
A total of 243 winning lines are provided for 5×3 reels, a common enough type of gameplay these days. A very interesting 12,500 coins jackpot is on the line, and as features the game mentions that it offers wilds, scatters, free spins and multipliers.
While betting in Pompeii, you are asked to select the number of credits per spin, or coins as others call them, and then there is the denomination as well. You have 25 to 125 credits to use, so that means that you can get up to 5 coins for each of the included bet lines.
The top paying combination of Pompeii is designed to pay 2,500x in exchange for you landing five of its symbols on the five reels. With up to 5 coins in use, you get a top payout of 12,500 coins out of this slot machine. The wild symbols add a lot to this top prize though, with their combined multipliers potentially delivering up to 15x more money.
It’s the sort of mechanic that can make a slot exciting, particularly since the ones with ways to win generally don’t tend to have big payouts to offer.
You might not be a fan of the graphics you get, but despite the usual dated graphics coming from Aristocrat, gameplay wise it’s a fun slot and the multipliers make it exciting to play.
Wild Symbols With Multipliers
Mount Vesuvius, the erupting volcano that destroyed the Ancient Roman city of Pompeii, is the wild symbol and it can make a big difference when it pops up. The symbol might be displayed only on two out of the five reels, but in each case it will have a multiplier to apply. The 2nd reel Mount Vesuvius applies its 3x multiplier, while the 4th reel one has a 5x one to improve winnings. When both wilds are present, the total multiplier applied to a win is 15x. The standard limitations apply, and so the scatter symbol is not replaceable with a wild.
Your standard scatter symbol, which you need appearing at least three times in any positions on the reels, will get you the free spins. You can get 10, 15 or 20 rounds, and this depends on the exact number of Gold Coin scatters that you see appear.
Free spins can be triggered again, even as you’re playing through the initial batch, so the fun can continue for some time.
An extra ability of the free games is the one where the wild symbol is now allowed to substitute for the scatters, which means that re-triggering the feature is actually easier than getting it in the first place.
Now, I’ve never heard anyone claim that they love the graphics of the online slot machines released by Aristocrat. They’re identical to the slots they offer in land-based casinos, where they’re a big part of the industry. Usually they just port them in the same form online, to be enjoyed by players that already know and love them. Still, despite the use of ugly Royals without any customization in them, the slot is enjoyable in its own way, particularly with this unique theme inspired by the city of Pompeii.
As symbols, the list has Mount Vesuvius, a Gold Coin which has Caesar’s face on it, soldier’s helmets, shields with short swords, war chariots and the Royals that I mentioned already.
A hugely popular game in land-based casinos, Pompeii promises to be fun for the online player as well, especially once you get the wild’s multipliers to influence your wins.
