Review of IGT's Rainbow Riches Slot Machine

The Rainbow Riches slot machine game is a 5 reel, 10 payline slots game designed and manufactured by IGT (International Game Technology). The game is available both on the Internet and in traditional land based casinos. As the name suggests, the game has a leprechaun theme. I think that’s cool. The full name of the game is actually a bit longer, as it has a subtitle: Rainbow Riches: Win Big Shindig.

The game has a maximum jackpot of 25,000 coins. It features bonus rounds as well as the “gamble” feature, which is one of my favorite slot machine features. Here’s how it works.

Any time you win, you get the chance to 'gamble'. Basically it’s a double or nothing bet with a 50% chance of winning. For players who don’t mind volatility, this feature can really juice up your bankroll if you get lucky a few times.

Reels and Symbols

The symbols on the reels include the following images:

  • Leprechauns
  • The Leprechaun’s Hat
  • Playing Card Symbols – The ace, king, queen, jack, and ten.
  • The Rainbow Riches Logo

The Gold Coin Logo symbol is the most important symbol in the game, as it’s the wild symbol. Wild symbols on slots work just like wild cards in poker games—they stand in (or substitute) for other symbols that might make for a winning combination.

The Leprechaun’s Hat is the scatter symbol, and it also triggers the “Pick Me” bonus round.

During the 'Pick Me' bonus round, you can trigger a second bonus game, Pots of Luck.

The Pick Me Bonus Round: You trigger this round by getting 3 of the Leprechaun’s Hat symbols on alternating reels. The screen changes from the reels of the slot machine to display 3 more Leprechaun Hats. You choose a hat, and the game tells you how much you win. Two of the hats just have flat cash amounts behind them, but the other has the 'Pots of Luck' bonus.

The Pots of Luck Bonus Round: You trigger this game by getting luck during the 'Pick Me Bonus Round'.  You choose one of three pots:

  • A Gold Pot
  • A Silver Pot
  • A Bronze Pot

The one you choose starts spinning, and the arrow pointing at the winner determines how much you’ve won. This prize is multiplied by the amount you bet on each payline. This game is where you have the opportunity to win the 25,000 coin jackpot.

Rainbow Riches is available in the following denominations: $0.01, $0.02, $0.05, $0.10, $0.20, $0.50, $1, $2, $3, $4, $5, $10, $15, and $20. If you bet on all 20 paylines (which you should) you’re wagering between $0.20 per spin on the low end and $400 per spin on the high end. This makes the game a good choice for both low rollers and high rollers.

When I tried the game, I played for $20 a spin. I didn’t win anything on my first spin, but on my 2nd spin, I won $20. On my 3rd spin I won $14, but on my 4th spin, I didn’t win anything.  On my 7th spin, I won $25.

It looks like, based on these 7 spins, that the game has a reasonably high hit ratio. 3 out of 7 is just shy of 50%, which isn’t bad. Of course, all these wins have been relatively small so far. In fact, after 7 spins, I’m down $81.

After another 22 spins, I started to get discouraged. Yeah, I was hitting a small win of some kind about a third of the time, but none of the wins were over $26, and most of them provided me with a net loss.

Then I triggered the bonus round.

I won $2000 on that spin.

My bankroll, which was $1000 when I sat down, now stood at $2600.

I decided to quit while I was ahead. But the bonus round was fun, and I decided I like this game. (I don’t love it, but I like it.)

Rainbow Riches is a fun real money game with a reasonably attractive, if undistinguished, theme. Like many multi reel multi line slots, you’ll see a lot of small wins. These serve as a motivator to keep you playing. Small wins, even if they result in a net loss, produce a psychological incentive to continue, and the casinos take full advantage of that. It’s in their interest to see you spend as much time on their machines as possible.

I have 3 recommendations for players of this game:

  • Play Slow.
  • Quit After a Big Win.
  • Have fun.
